With vast greens, rolling hills, and nearby villages full of character, the Peak District is the place to be in the summer season - it’s one of the reasons we are so proud to call the UK’s oldest National Park our home. Our very location grants you access to all things wonderful in the Peaks, as well as a luxurious base to come back to in the evenings, where you can relish the breathtaking views of the Peak District, maybe whilst enjoying a glass of fizz (or two)?
So, now that the days are longer, and skies are brighter, here’s some of our recommendations for things to do in summer in the Peaks.
Explore the Scenic Trails
One of our top things to do in summer, come rain or shine, will always be to explore landscapes on our doorstep, and what better way to seize the summer days than to grab your hiking boots and head for the hills! We go over plenty of walking destinations on our ‘Local Walks’ page, but here are some of our personal favourites nearby:
Kinder Scout
This area is one of the most popular destinations for hiking within the ‘Dark Peaks’ (the higher and wilder part of the Peak District), and for good reason. Here you can find incredible landscapes, and classic locations such as Jacob’s Ladder. What’s more, it’s just five miles from Losehill House, and easily accessible by local bus routes.
Mam Tor
Our other local favourite is Mam Tor, a shorter hike in comparison to Kinder Scout, but that doesn’t mean the views are less iconic. From the very top of Mam Tor, you can see north over Edale Valley to Kinder Scout offering some of the most dramatic scenery in the area, all just a stone’s throw away from us.
The Great Ridge and Win Hill Walk
And how could we possibly forget! You can scale Lose Hill directly from Losehill Hotel & Spa, and walk along the Great Ridge, descending from Win Hill via Twitchill’s Farm, there’s endless beauty to explore, straight from our doorstep.
We’d recommend taking plenty of water and stocking up on SPF since the sun’s UV rays are stronger at a higher elevation, Kinder Scout in particular is the highest in the National Park! Some hiking routes may be a little tougher than others, but we promise the views once you reach the top are absolutely worth it. For an added element of adventure, why not seek out local caves!
Picnicking in the Parks
A cheap and easy way to enjoy this summer season is to make the most of the many spots that are dotted around the Peaks that are perfect for a picnic. Here are some recommendations:
Chatsworth House
Around a 30 minute drive from Losehill House Hotel & Spa, this stately home is not only an iconic historic landmark, but also showcases a gorgeous 150-acre garden full of rich history, waterworks, sculptures, and a Victorian rock garden.
Chatsworth House is dog-friendly and family-friendly, with free family trails that allow visitors to explore the surrounding woodlands and history of the gardens. Famously known for its role as Mr Darcy’s home in ‘Pride and Prejudice’, it’s also the perfect location for a romantic picnic for two.
Plus, if you’re looking to add a little something special to your picnic spread, you can pay a visit to the Chatsworth Farm Shop and indulge in delicious local delicacies.
Pavilion Gardens
This Grade II-listed historic venue showcases award-winning gardens spanning over 23-acres of land in Buxton, just 30 minutes from us. This spot hosts a large picnic area with open green spaces and plenty of activities to keep the little ones entertained on a sunny summer’s day including an activity park and a conservatory to explore.
All that said, if you’re looking for an alternative dining option, our Grafene restaurant offers award winning dining with dishes made from delicious local Peak District produce.
Enjoy Local Festivals and Events
As the summer sun brings the Peak District to life, it also ushers in a vibrant array of local festivals and events that offer something for everyone. Here’s what’s on in the Peak District that you won’t want to miss:
Buxton Festival
One of the UK’s leading art festivals, the Buxton Festival showcases world class opera, music, books and jazz, a perfect activity for those who love all things art and culture.
Derbyshire Sausage and Cider Festival
Foodies, rejoice! With a cast array of sausage and cider offers on display, the Derbyshire Sausage and Cider Festival is a food lover's dream come true. Come along and tuck into a day full of delicious food and live music.
